User Requirements

User requirements are perhaps the most important part of any comparison shopping experience, but they are often overlooked.  Many users do not take the time to accurately define their requirements.  Vendors do not really help the matter for a couple of reasons, the first reason being vendors are not the entity buying the system and whereas they can make suggestions, they cannot really define requirements for someone else.  The second reason vendors do not help with this issue, is they really don’t have a vested interested in helping a client define the requirements.

User requirements is everything that you want the system to do functionally, as well as things like budget and other resource considerations.  It is important that your team define these things so that when comparing different vendors and their products/services you can pick what is best for your organization.  It is also important to consider support requirements, in order to ensure a smooth support transition, please include some IT people in your team that is laying out requirements.  IT people are very capable of telling you what they can and cannot do, and you need to be sure that you are not going to over extend the department.

Another issue that comes up, when dealing with requirements is training.  Training is a service that we provide.  Good training is essential to keeping things running smooth once you have defined your requirements.

What do you want your EHR system to do for you? Remember there’s lots of things they can do, and don’t forget a lot of patients are now getting personal health records (PHRs) so you want to ensure your EHR can interact with a PHR as necessary.
