Mythistoria,[1] vel fabula Milesia,[2][3] est longum fictionis narrativae opus, usitate oratione soluta, non versibus, conscriptum et liber editum. Nonnulli mythistoriarum scriptores, inter quos Nathaniel Hawthorne,[4] Hermannus Melville,[5] Anna Radcliffe,[6] Ioannes Cowper Powys,[7] romance, vocabulum Anglicum nostra lingua fabulas romanicas sive fabulas romanenses[8] significans, ad suas mythistorias describendas adhibuerunt. Fabula brevis diegema saepe appellatur.

Huic generi litterario sunt radices historicae in fabulis mediaevalibus et hodiernis atque in memoriis novellae. Secundum Margaritam Doddy, mythistoriae ipsi est "historia continua lateque patens bina fere milia annorum longinqua,"[9] ex mythistoriis Graecis et Romanis, romantia chivalrica,? ac traditione novellae renascentiae Italicae exorta.[10] Forma antiqua per motum Romanticum saeculo undevicensimo redintegrata est, praecipue in fabulis romanicis historicis Gualteri Scott et in mythistoriis gothicis.[11] Nonnulli eruditi, inter quos M. H. Abrams et Gualterus Scott, arguerunt mythistoriam esse narrationem fictivam quae realisticam status societatis depictionem exhibet, cum fabula romantica ullam narrationem fictam comprehendit quae casus insolitos vel mirabiles vehementius dicit.[12][13][14]

Vocabulo roman, voce Francogallica, olim omnes libri idiomate vulgari (lingua romana) scripti designabantur. Nostris autem temporibus, fabulis singulis (Anglice novel) contrarie, opus maius pedestre significat.
