Lingua Dhivehi (Dhīvehī) seu Maldiviana[2] ad linguas Indicas e divisione Indoiranica familiae Indoeuropaeae pertinet. In insulis Maldivis adhibetur necnon in insula Malicoy et in urbe Trivandrum Indiae; est lingua nationalis Maldivarum.

Glossarium antiquissimum linguae Dhivehi anno fere 1607 ab exploratore Francisco Pyrard de Laval confectum est. Gulielmus Geiger philologus Germanicus multa utilia de hac lingua divulgavit.

Dialecti distinguuntur Male (iuxta caput civitatis adhibita), Maliku Bas (insulae Malicoy) et meridionales, scilicet Huvudu, Foa Mulaku et Addu: sermones meridionales satis inter se intelleguntur, sed qui dialecto Male utuntur alios sermones minime cognoscunt. Lingua Dhivehi scriptura Thana, in his insulis inventa, sed et abecedario Latino conscribitur.
