Pars atolli in Oceano Pacifico duas insulas super scopulo curalii monstrat.

Atollum (-i, n.)[1] est marina curalii insula quae lacunam partim aut omnino circumplectitur. Vocabulum ipsum de vocabulo atolu (recte އަތޮޅު, atholhu) e Lingua Dhivehi cadit, qua homines Insularum Maldivarum utuntur. Vocabulum Anglice atoll, primum anno 1625 adhibitum, populo gratum saeculo undevicensimo factum est a Carolo Darwin, qui atolla in commentario ratione descripsit (1842:5). Aliae vocabuli definitiones sunt "scopulus anularis qui lacunam circumplectitur in quo adsunt nulla promontoria nisi scopuli et minimae insulae detritu scopuloso compositae" (McNeil 1954:396) et "morphologice stricto sensu, anularis sicut redimiculum scopulus qui lacunam mediam circumplectitur" (Fairbridge 1950:341).
