The 1989 Winter Universiade, the XIV Winter Universiade, took place in Sofia, Bulgaria.[1]
Iran boycotted the event in response to the Iran–Iraq War in 1980. Iran and Iraq also chose to boycott the 1989 Summer Universiade in Duisburg for the same reason.
