Will you please get firmly into the habit of uploading free images, ie. Creative Commons and GFDL licensed, to the Commons. For example, in the case of File:Gwaelod-y-garth-photo.jpg, you should have used CommonsHelper to copy it to the Commons. I think I'll get firmly into the habit of not editing Wikipedia instead. Most of the images you have marked as untagged are my own work. Hello Porius1,

I've had a little look at your image contributions and see that they generally fall into two categories:

(a) images you say are copied from other language versions of wikipedia,

(b) images you have credited to "Rhion Pritchard"

Re (a), presumably the licensing info that went with them needs to be copied across. Have you kept the same filename when you copied them? If so, then presumably they could help by writing some kind of computer program to copy it all over for you, instead of your having to do it manually.

Re (b), I assume that by elimination these must be the ones that you describe above as being your own work, and which you don't authorise to copy onto the Commons website. Having now found the Wikimedia rules on licensing, see [1], I think that in that case they could insist on removing them from this site. This is because the licensing policy expects most material to be under a free licence (which would mean that you cannot then prevent it being copied onto other websites), and it also severely limits the scope of individual projects to make exemptions from this - see in particular item 3 of the resolution.

(a) Sure, there will be no problem with us having the images, but only once that licensing info has actually been copied over to accompany them. Additional points of note regarding this:

(i) Attribution info must be copied as well, as the relevant licences require this: any Creative Commons "attribution" licence does so explicitly, and also GFDL insists that copyright notices are reproduced in all copies. For example compare [2], which attributes photographer Hugh McCann, with [3], which currently doesn't. Merely referring to a copy elsewhere which includes proper attribution (e.g. on the English site) is not enough to meet the licence requirements.

(ii) In the case of fair use images, this includes not only the mere fact that fair use is claimed, but it must be done machine-readably, and it must also include the "rationale" of why fair use is held to be applicable; these requirements are enshrined in items 2 and 4 of the resolution, so were are not at liberty to waive them in the EDP.

(b) I am only reading what Porius1 wrote above: "I do NOT authorize putting them on Commons." If they are to remain here, they are going to need to be tagged with either a public domain declaration as you say, or a free licence, either of which will render that "I do NOT authorize..." ineffectual.

Wikimedia Foundation Board decided in 2009 to stop using GFDL as a sole license per this resolution.

GFDL is not a good license because it makes it hard to reuse the images (and the articles where the image is used).
