Please leave descriptive edit summaries

Information icon Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I noticed that one or more recent edit(s) you made did not have an edit summary. You can use the edit summary field to explain your reasoning for an edit, or to provide a description of what the edit changes. Summaries save time for other editors and reduce the chances that your edit will be misunderstood. For some edits, an adequate summary may be quite brief.

The edit summary field looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

Please provide an edit summary for every edit you make. With a Wikipedia account you can give yourself a reminder by setting Preferences → Editing → Tick Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary (or the default undo summary), and then click the "Save" button. I see you have been editing with this account for more than five years, so let's not pretend you don't know any better; this report on xtools shows that you've left summaries on only 2.5% of your major edits. Hello. To be honest yes, I've recently thought about my edits that I've done without summaries in the past and I realised it's wrong. The truth is that I always considered the majority my edits as being sort of minor, though I almost never used the summary button in the context. You're very right about what you said above. Just changed my preferences settings so I'll get reminded about the summaries any time I make an edit. Thank you very much for reaching me about this. I'll consider this as being the first and last major warning. Best regards! JeyReydar97 (talk) 11:23, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. Thanks for taking the criticism well. While I appreciate that many edits may seem trivial or mundane and not worthy of description, like minor copy edits or maintenance work, at the moment an editor submits any edit, only they know what they did and why; every other editor who sees it in their watchlist, recent changes or later in page histories has no clue what happened without examining the diff(s), which is frankly a massive pain in the butt. I'm pleased this encounter proved a positive one. Happy editing and see you around :) Fred Gandt · talk · contribs 21:26, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
