Do you want WebCasts – LIMS TV?  What’s next?

by Ephraim Gadsby

With the advent of high bandwidth Internet connections, it is now becoming possible to present live television and radio over the Internet.  A very interesting technology that is on its way is called IPTV.  Much like VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), IPTV is promising and delivering (where it is available) television programming on demand and with virtually and infinite number of channels.  What is this going to do to traditional TV stations???  Probably the same thing the Internet is doing to Newspapers and print magazines.  Just look at what VoIP is doing to the traditional telephone company.

Now with Internet Technology, many companies are presenting more than just flat written words but are providing what are called “WebCasts”.  With a webcast, a virtual, real time trade show can take place on the Internet.  Granted, I have never participated in a live webcast but I have viewed numerous recorded ones.  I find recorded webcasts to be more useful to me personally because I am too shy to participate in a live webcast whereas a recorded one allows me to view at my leisure and as often as I wish.

To see an example of a recorded webcast of some software (Macromedia Captivate) that lets you build your own webcast and on-line, interactive movies: CLICK HERE.

I would like to encourage all LIMS suppliers to start creating their own webcast recordings of their products rather than putting out wordy white papers and brochures.  If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a ‘Movie’ is worth a thousand pictures.  If you make the webcasts, I am sure that you can post them on LIMSfinder and other portal sites to promote it.  I am sure this is the sort of stuff that consumers want.  If you make it entertaining, so much the better.

I am taking a reader poll to find out if webcasts are desirable and useful:
