Event Overview:

“Mercury is widespread and persistent in the environment due to its use in many products and its emission from combustion processes. Due to the tendency of mercury to bioaccumulate in the environment, extremely low concentrations can have a large impact. Therefore, accurate measurements at concentrations in sub part per trillion or parts per quadrillion are required. Any measurement of chemicals in that concentration range, especially when so is ubiquitous in the environment, poses significant cross-contamination challenges to both sampling and analytical processes.

EPA Method 1669, in conjunction with EPA Method 1631, provides a methodology to low-level mercury sampling and analysis that ensures sample contamination does not occur from sample containers, sample handling, or the laboratory. Additionally, the analytical methodology is sufficiently sensitive and robust to meet stringent metals water quality criteria. These methods in tandem provide a reliable and accurate process to make reliable and accurate measurements of mercury concentration in aqueous-based effluents.”
