06/01/2022 - Practical Applications of a SDMS (Scientific Data Management System)

Starlims Post Thumbnail BlogLabs and research facilities accumulate large amounts of data every day — a continuing problem is what to do with all that information while maintaining data integrity. A Scientific Data Management System, or SDMS, is a type of document management system software that helps manage data generated by lab instruments, electronic laboratory notebooks (ELN), chromatography data systems (CMS), and laboratory information management systems (LIMS) using a single integrated platform.  [Read More]

06/01/2022 - What Is LIMS? Everything You Need to Know

A Laboratory Information Management System, otherwise known as LIMS, is a comprehensive, software-based solution to maximize a laboratory’s efficiencies through centralized workflow. From specimen preparation to final report release, a LIMS is designed to simplify a lab’s day-to-day operations while reducing the risk of mistakes through paperless operations.   [Read More]

06/01/2022 - How Long Does a LIMS Implementation Take?

How Long Does a LIMS Implementation Take? After asking how much does a LIMS cost, the next most pressing question that potential clients have is, how long will a LIMS implementation take? The short answer is that a laboratory information management system (LIMS) implementation can take anywhere from a couple of months to a year or more. The long answer, considering your individual situation, is in this blog post. There are approaches that any lab or organization can take to help a LIMS implementation be successful and stick to a defined schedule. [Read More]

05/10/2022 - A roadmap for LIMS at NIST Material Measurement Laboratory

This April 2022 Technical Note from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and its Material Measurement Laboratory investigates the laboratory information management system (LIMS) within the scope of the laboratory's strategic mission and goals "to support a wide array of research disciplines." Greene et al. provide a roadmap of implementing LIMS and related technologies and adapting their research workflows to get the most of LIMS while also taking advantage of FAIR Data Principles. After a brief introduction, the authors describe both their short- and long-term objectives towards the lab's vision of implementing LIMS effectively, along with the associated challenge of meeting those objectives. They then discuss the related stakeholders and how they impact implementation of the LIMS roadmap. The authors also discuss LIMS architecture and quality metrics associated with its implementation, before concluding that their "next-generation LIMS will provide standards for interoperability and collaboration, further enabling scientific investigation spanning across experimental groups."
