Herzfeld nasceu em Viena durante o reinado da Casa de Habsburgo no Império Austro-Húngaro. Seu pai foi um médico e professor ordinário de obstetrícia e ginecologia na Universidade de Viena. Sua mãe, Camilla com sobrenome de nascimento Herzog, era filha de um jornalista e irmã do químico orgânico R. O. Herzog.[1]
