History section: Edited two paragraphs on Hays City as frontier town for concision, style and clarity of sources; moved paragraph break. A 1999 web source in previous version, Germans from Russia: Children of the Steppe (Prairie Public Television), appears to be unavailable now although the DVDs for this TV documentary are still in stock. A bibliography entry describing Germans from Russia cannot by itself show precisely where the Volga Russians settled; research for the documentary was conducted in states other than Kansas. So I inserted a [citation needed].

I noted that date of Hays City name change to Hays (1895) comes ten years after its date of incorporation (1885) according to Kansas Historical Society Post Offices database and the City of Hays web site. The Hays Convention & Visitors Bureau “History of Hays” page is at a new web site separate from the City’s, so I put new link in, but only in these two paragraphs. The new page will be referenced from citations that use ref name=HaysCity, but not if the page is cited without this Wikipedia cite web template parameter. (Whew!)
A commercial image retailer, Legends of Kansas, is referenced elsewhere in the article, but I chose not to use it as it got James Hayes’s (murdered 1869 Union Pacific watchman) name wrong and does not list its own sources. I did not attempt to evaluate Mary Ann Thompson’s piece on Kansas History Websites. My two Kansas Historical Quarterly sources for the “rougher element” leaving town as Hays civilized differ from previous version. They are sufficient to establish existence of routes for the ruffians to do so at the time given, but do not prove actual movement of people from Hays. This is a deficiency I apologize for, which might be corrected with better literature search.
